Yew Wood Place
Yew Wood Place, formerly called Hemlock Place, is a proposal to build 16 affordable housing units at 609 Second Avenue in Daajing Giids. This property has been generously donated to our Society by M'akola Housing Society. It was previously occupied by a derelict duplex, an older mobile home and an abandoned vehicle. This project is a partnership between the M'akola Societies and the Daajing Giids Heritage Housing Society (DGHHS), who have been developing the proposal since January, 2020.
The legal, hazmat and topographical surveys were completed in August 2020. The lot consolidation and rezoning plans, as well as the public hearings for the four lots, were completed in November 2020. In 2022, the uninhabitable duplex was removed and the mobile home was gifted and moved to the new owner’s property. In January 2023, the entire site was cleared and levelled in preparation for construction. We are grateful for the support that we have received from Jennifer Rice, North Coast MLA, and from the Village of Daajing Giids. If this project is approved for funding, we hope to be able to offer 16 affordable housing units to Islanders here in the near future!
